To state the obvious, there’s a lot of erotic writing out there. Websites like literotica.com and blogging forums have created a tremendous community of producer and consumers of erotic fiction.
But, because it’s so easy to make your erotic writing available, its lead to a lot of pretty marginal (ok.. crappy) material out there.
So, as a consumer, here are some tips to you aspiring creators of erotica (note: I don’t write much erotica myself, so you can take this in the spirit of ‘those who can’t do, teach’).
1. Don’t be in such a goddamn hurray. Rather than getting immediately into the sex and graphic details, build the premise. Good erotic writing draws the reader into a scenario that makes them anticipate the climax(es).
1a. The flip side… get on with it. While good plot development is important, unless you’re D.H. Laurence, you probably lack the writing skills to make 13 pages of stage setting, character development and description compelling. I read a story recently by someone who was obviously an office manager for a busy online sales company. The story started with the premise that the couple occasionally played hooky from work to give relief from their stressful jobs. This was followed by 7 screens of all of the stresses of filling orders, addressing customer complaints, soliciting new clients, choosing software platforms…. Not only did I lose my erection, I also developed an unrestrainable urge to file a labour practices complaint against Amazon.
2. Build from teasing to sexy to dirty – this may be a personal preference, but I like the sexual elements of the story to build throughout the story. I enjoy stories that start with flirtation and light sexuality and then build to more explicit and sexual content.
3. Practice Good Grammar. Enough said.
4. Vary your kinks – Erotica is a great way for both writers and readers to explore their erotic imagination. Don’t be scarred to write about things you’ve never done and even things you’ve never fantasized about doing. Some of my favourite writers will explore kinks I never thought would turn me on and would likely never try, but seeing who their character’s explore those kinks is both fascinating and sexy as hell.
Looking forward to all kinds of hot and compelling erotica.
