I’m in a tough position… torn between my love of sexy lingerie and my desire for privacy.
What?! Do I really have to choose? Yeah.. kind of.
I’ve noticed an interesting pattern in the last year or so. About a year ago, my wife started buying more sexy products online – sexy clothing, lingerie, sex toys… really fun stuff. As a result, she is finding that her Facebook feed, the ads that appear on her browser and targeted email are directing her to more and more sex products that are exactly the kinds of things that she loves.
The result – at least once a week (often more) we are getting a package in the mail with an awesome sexy surprise. Her lingerie and sex toy drawers are literally overflowing, And her wardrobe has become visibly sexier. I love it.
But……. is it weird that ‘the internet’ knows so much about her preferences and purchasing pattern. Obviously, whenever she makes a purchase, what she buys is being tracked and then sold to advertisers that can use it to target ads and content specifically to her. Its kind of like someone following you around the shopping mall and keeping a list of all your purchases. Yuck!
I’m a fan of privacy. As long as you’re not putting anyone in danger, I really don’t think other people have a right to know where you go, what you do, what you guy, and your 10 million predilections and preferences. Its just not anyone’s business but your own.
And, sure, a bunch of ad companies and online retailers knowing my wife buys size 0 crotchless panties… probably no big deal. But if your insurer finds out you are buying naturopathic cancer treatment remedies or if your employer finds out you’re buying recreational drug paraphernalia… not to cool. There is a slippery slope… and I worry about the pool of forsaken privacy it lands us into.
So, I don’t love this forfeiture of privacy. But… I like the sexy lingerie. Tough choice.
