Strip Clubs are dying. In Toronto, of the 63 strip clubs in the city in the late 90s, only 14 remain. Even Montreal – home of Canada.. no… the world’s… finest peeler bars, is seeing some of its largest clubs closing shop.
The reasons are obvious – free online porn, ability to meet and fulfill fetishes online urban renewal pushing up the rents in seedy neighbourhoods that had housed strip clubs, a certain intolerance for ‘that kind of business’ in swishy downtowns.
But its all a little sad. I have a certain fondness and nostalgia for strip clubs. When my wife and I were just starting to experiment sexually, a Saturday night at the strip club was, for us, a wild and titilating date night. Going back further, strip clubs with my high school and university buddies were amazing male bonding experiences.
There are lots of bad things that can go with strip clubs – exploitation of women, organized crime – but if society really cared about fixing these problems, we could.
And if we fixed these problems (and we could) what would be left with – beautiful women making lots of money, happy guys and girls getting a naughty show, and another way to destigmatize sex. A win/win/win.
Not to sound like an old guy idealizing the past… but I will certainly miss strip clubs when they’re gone.
