We recently bought a hot tub. We’ve thought about it for a while but the deal was sealed last winter, while my wife and I were outside running (at minus 14 degrees). By the time the next winter came around, we would have a hot tub to soothe our tired, aging, freezing muscles.
We decided to go with the Cadillac – 7 seats, stereo, mood lighting. It’s beautiful.
I was telling a friend at work about our purchase. His immediate response – what will that tell others about you? I didn’t get it. He said ‘only swingers and nudists have hot tubs. Which are you’. Hmmm.
I hadn’t anticipated that. Does hot tub ownership evoke images of nudity and sexual freedom? Does it betray certain lifestyle choices? I hadn’t really thought of that potential – although I have no issue with it.
It got me thinking of two things
- Are there some common characteristics of hot tub owners? In my (very limited) sample of hot tub-owning friends and acquaintances, I have found (i) all hot tub owners aren’t nudists or swingers, but a fair number are… certainly a larger proportion than are swingers or nudists in the general population; (ii) hot tub owners tend to be fun happy, easy going people… which is perhaps why so many are swingers and/or nudists.
- What will your neighbors assume about your lifestyle when they find out you have a hot tub? I suspect they’ll think you’re fun, happy and easygoing. Those who like you for that.. love ‘em. Those who don’t approve… f&*k ‘em. Its a good screening tool for potential friendship.
Well… gotta go. Margaritas and body shots are waiting in the hot tub.
