A friend of mine recently finished his PhD in Psychology from a prestigious US university. His professional focus is relationships and relationship counselling. I’ve always been interested in what attracts us to our significant others and was, therefore, really excited to get his take on the rules of attraction.
So, imagine my disappointment when he said, quite simply, ‘its what you already knew’. Women are attracted to men who they feel will be successful and powerful. Men are attracted to women who are physically attractive. Sure, there are tons of exceptions. But this is the basic and prevalent.
I said all the things you would expect from a progressive. Hasn’t this all changed now that women are in the workforce, being better educated and approached salary parity? Aren’t men wanting an equal partner, not just arm candy?
He said no. Women are attracted to men who they feel will be successful and powerful. Men are attracted to women who are physically attractive.
I don’t know… but he’s studied this much more deeply than I have.
