I’ve come to realize that one of the characteristics I value most in my friends is an ability to embrace experiences.
My wife and I recently decided to host a party. We invited 30 or 40 people. The immediate response were interesting. About 15 people, the moment we sent the invitation, responded back and said they would come. Another small group – for very legitimate reasons – aren’t able to make it. And another group of 10 or so said they would have to look into babysitting, logistics, see if their partner wanted to come, etc.
When we looked at the group that responded yes immediately, we were struck that almost everyone who we would consider ‘our favourite people to hang out with’ was in that group. These were not necessarily our closest friend, nor would some of them have felt any particular loyalty to – to be honest, 4 of them we hardly know but we’ve always had fun with them when we’re together. But they are all people who embrace fun experiences and figure out the details later… and this is what we love.
This might be a poor example, but it made us reflect on this characteristic we like in people. A propensity to ‘just say yes’ and to embrace experiences outside of their day-to-day routine. I love having friends who are up for drinks on the spur of the moment, will try new sports or activities even though they know they will be hard, or people who will thrown themselves into social situations that are unfamiliar to them.
In that spirit my wife recently embraced a new mantra. Never Again… Until Next Time. I love it!
