Phil Robertson, for all his positive attributes (which I would argue are few to none) has never struck me as a paragon of enlightenment, fair mindedness or egalitarianism. He has said repeatedly that his two passions in life are duck hunting and the Lord. That’s it. Point Finale. Do either of those things preclude him from being a bigot? Of course not. In fact, they probably of make it quite likely.
I think we are at fault… for expecting more. We place all form of celebrity on a pedestal and expect them to represent the values we like our ‘betters’ to have. Phil Robertson is underling of the pedestal of respect he seems to have been anointed with. Not (just) because he is a bigot, but because he has done northing to deserve the scale of admiration he has. Barrack Obama works 24/7, 365 days a year trying to make America a better place. Stacey Stewart, president of United Way comities her life to helping those in need; same with Kevin Jenkins, president of World Vision.
Obama, Stewart and Jenkins are heroes, deserving of respect and, on whom we can place a reasonable expectation of fair judgement and strong values. Phil Robertson is just some A-Hole who invented a good duck call.
