I just read (yet another) note from our daughter’s school about a group of kids that had organized a bake sale and raised an amazing amount of money for the Humane Society.
My immediate thought — this is great that so many kids are now doing fundraising events dedicated to raising money for charitable causes. Within our school, the majority of birthday parties now ask for donations in lieu of gifts. Someone at the school has, at least once a week, a fundraiser for a charitable cause.
Interestingly, they are almost always directed at animal welfare. Occasionally, one will be for an environmental cause. But never, never, are they to help human beings in need.
I asked my wife about this. Her theory: animals are cute and cuddly; the environment is beautiful. Poor people… not so much.
So, we need a cuter brand of hobos.
