So why, with the internet so full of beautiful women in swimsuits, is the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue still a thing?
First, my bias.. I’m really, really happy the SI Swimsuit Issue is still around. I have a huge sense of nostalgia for print media – be it Playboy, The Economist, the paper version of the New York Times or Sports Illustrated. There is something about holding and leafing through printed media that will always be better than electronic for me.
But with the rest of the world abandoning print and embracing the internet for all things news and sexy…. how in the world can the SI Swimsuit Issue still have appeal. Well…
- SI has mastered digital integration. The online version of the swimsuit issue is beautiful. It’s a great complement to the print edition and, likely, great at driving views to SI’s overall digital platform.
- People still consider the SI Swimsuit Print edition to be ‘special’. It probably is that sense of nostalgia, and the fact that it’s a once a year thing… but people still like owning that particular magazine.
- SI has been brilliant in combining relevant athletes with known models. They put together a very intriguing package of models that appeals to SI’s core audience and beyond
