My first bachelor party… I’m 19, and a friend had unexpectedly gotten his girlfriend pregnant was getting married. The bachelor party – a suite at the Holiday Inn, a stripper (at the time I had no idea strippers did house calls) and a bathtub full of beer. At that point in my life I had not experienced much decadence, adventure or indulgence in my life… but even I knew it was lame.
So, even then, 19 and naive, I knew there had to be more to the pre-marriage ritual than this. So now, flash forward 20+ years. That same friend is about to embark on marriage number two. And as a testament to his ability to keep friends (or his inability to make new ones), its pretty much the same group of guys invited to bachelor party redux.
But, aside from the same cast of characters, everything else has changed (thank god). There will be no Holiday Inn suite and – and this shocked me given the predilections of these guys – there may not even be strippers. Last week a list of options came to us for a vote… and its pretty impressive. The options for a 2017 bachelor party (note that some of these are a little pricey, but other can be done on a reasonable budget):
- Weekend at a working ranch in Montana. I’ve not had a lot of experience horseback riding, but I love the idea of a weekend with the guys that is active, outdoors… not just the usual booze-fest
- Outdoor paintball. This is not my thing, but similar to the ranch, I like the idea of outdoor and active
- Skydiving. Seems like a cool idea for bonding and getting the shot scared out of us. I’ve never tried it so it could be fun
- Weekend in Vegas or New York. This sounds good on paper, but I worry it turns into an all-day drink-a-thon with wicked hangovers the rest of the weekend. Probably not my thing with these guys, but with the right group of guys this could be awesome.
All of these seem a significant improvement over a stripper at the local Holiday Inn. I’m pretty psyched.
