Throw out your Cosmo romance quizzes. The best test of the current strength of a relationship is how you mange jointly assembling IKEA furniture.
Our 9 year old daughter is moving into her own room and, the day before we were to leave on a two week vacation, my wife and I decided to spend Saturday afternoon assembling the new IKEA bed, dresser and night stand.
This is not the first time we have done home projects together. It usually goes OK but by the end there is some mutual frustration and general shortness with one another. This time, I feared the worst. We had each been going through some business at work and more travel than we should be doing. We needed a vacation and this project was probably not the smartest move 12 hours before our scheduled departure.
I am happy to report that we surprised ourselves. We had a great time. No arguments, no frustration, no raised voices. Even when we had to take the bed frame apart when we discovered we had built it backwards – no issues. Our 9 year old even “helped” for about an hour.
I think I am going to write in to Cosmo and tell them about it.
