When I was a kid, in the 70s and 80s, the rule in our house was if you could pull yourself out of bed, you went to school. Times were different then – we knew less (or were less concerned) with passing on illness and neither of my parents had paid ‘sick leave’.
As I sit in our home office, for the third day, nursing our sick daughter, I am reminded how times have changed. She has a wicked, seal-like barking cough. Other than that, she feels fine, but she sounds awful. So, my dilemma, should she be staying home? On one hand, she certainly has a bad cold and I am scarred she could be spreading that if she is around other kids. On the other hand, she is otherwise fine – alert, able to do work.
We have obviously made the decision that she should be home, but I know if it had been me at 9 years old, I would be sitting on the school bus right now.
