My wife has just completed her certification to become a yoga instructor. It had been her main ‘covid project’.
She had wanted to do this for ages, so when she found herself with extra time during the covid lockdown she started the training. Its actually pretty gruelling. 6 hours of online training a week plus about another 6 hours of reading and studying. And a few hours of practice. `Between anatomy, the philosophical basis, all the poses and meditation.. it was a lot.
But when she finished her practicum – a 20 minute practice she had to take me and two of our friends through – she is now a certified instructor.
Her challenge now – what type of instructor does she want to be? What will be her ‘voice’? Ideally, she said, she would like to be a ‘sexy, spicy’ yoga instructor. While still being tuned into the physical and spiritual elements of yoga, she said she want to be a little racy and sexy.
Its a fine balance. While yoga is maybe inherently sexy, it is less overtly so. She wants her classes to be light and engaging and to have a sexy vibe but she also wants people to feel they’ve gotten a good yoga experience.
She’s trying to think of ways to spice it up. She prefers a yoga practice that is a little more interactive and tactile. She wants to be able to help adjust her students onto poses. With consent, of course, the act of a yoga instructor helping to adjust you into poses can be a very intimate act. As she teaches to good friends this is very doable. With strangers its trickier but some instructors – seeking active consent first – will do it. This sort of intimacy can be considered quite core to the yoga experience but its tricky in modern times and has to be done with very explicit consent.
Another thing she’s working on is how she describes her postures. Yoga instructors are encouraged to use metaphors and illusions to describe poses. The poses are so sensual that you can definitely introduce some fun, provocative language. Again, there is a line between provocative and cheesy. Fortunately my wife is quiet poetic in her language so I’m sure she can thread that needle.
And then there is how she dresses. Again, its tough. Her goal is to appear a little sexy and provocative but to stay well within the realm of tasteful.
Being the sexy yoga instructor is a little tougher than she thought it would be. Ideas are welcomed.
