One of my geekier indulgences is sexy discussion cards and sexy board games. So, a couple years ago, I was thrilled to learn that greatsexgames.com put out a game that married the two concepts.
The premise – it is a card-based game where you draw cards from piles like ‘sex acts’, ‘pillow talk’ (fantasies), ‘kinks’, ‘oral action’ and a few others. Each card asked you to imagine a scenario and asks you to predict your partner’s response to that scenario. It might be something like would you be open to anal play. It might be more elaborate like if you asked me to dress up, what would you want be to be.
It is clearly designed to get you talking about your desires and kinks and see if there are ways that you would be expanding your sexual boundaries. The game designers’ theory – they are the folks who did the Sex Is Fun podcast – is that discussing things like watersports and anal play in the context of a game and ‘because the cards told me to discuss it’ makes it less intimidating to be honest and open about your desires.
My wife and I bought it a couple years ago, but it got lost at the bottom of a drawer and we never got around to playing it. Well, Saturday we found … and we had a great time.
We are pretty good at talking about our fantasies and sexual desires, but the game certainly brought up a few scenarios we hadn’t really thought or talked about before. For example, I knew she was into light bondage; I didn’t know she fantasized about being bossed around sexually by a woman. It was a fun way to learn about that and to discuss it. Who knows were it might lead, but a cool door is now open.
Sex Games can sound really nerdy and awkward… and they are. But give them a chance and go in with an open mind. They can be fun.
