Confession time — I have never been on a sex cam site. But I saw a new documentary that HBO just put out – Sex Now – and the first episode dealt with the sex camming industry. HBO is known for high quality programming so it was not surprising that this was a quality program. There were a few things I found interesting that I thought I would share:
– the women profiled – the cam girls – seemed pretty happy with the arrangement. From their perspective, unlike other jobs in the sex industry, they have a very high level of control, they never have to see their clients so they feel very safe, and the start up costs are incredibly low
– on the other hand, there was little mention made of the potential for sex trafficking, pimping and other coercize practices. For a lucrative, underground business, I find it a little hard to believe this is not an issue
– the money — not bad but not great. Women in the business said they made 60-200$/hr.
Camming is a huge industry resulting a pretty viable little underground economy. I winder how well we understand the industry? Is there more exploitation that meets the eye? Is it really a viable, safe way to make some extra money? All interesting questions.
