Does frequent sex make us more religious? Kind of.
A new scientific study out of Duke University found that the same chemicals that our body releases during sex (oxytocin) also makes us feel more spiritual and religious.
The study found that in addition to the normal feeling that some with sex with your partner – closeness, intimacy, pleasure – the release of oxytocin also make people feel ore spiritual and connected to a higher being.
This certainly seems counterintuitive on the face of it. Sex for anything beyond conception is generally frowned on by the church and the idea that sex can be a positive tool for either closeness, pleasure or religiosity is kind of an anathema to most religious leaders.
But despite the view of the church, there seems to be some real work evidence to bad this us. Religious people are horny… maybe more so than non religious people. States with the highest levels of religiosity consume porn at much higher rates than the general population. And study after study confirm that religious people feel they have really good sex lives (however they choose to define that”. And – and this shocked me – religious women report to have higher rates of orgasms than non-religious women.
So… next time you walk by a church and see all those men and women in their conservatives dresses and dark suits… imagine the dirty thoughts that are likely rushing through their heads as they anticipate rushing home and doing the dirty.
