Most of us know what a Rave is. An all night party with lots of EDM music, ecstasy, neon and young people. But have you heard of a Chill?
A chill is the lesser know, and lesser practiced follow-on to a Rave. Think of it as a love drug-fuelled cuddle party. After the rave, people retreat back to a large space full of luxurious pillows and blankets, light house music, massage tables. They take MDMA – the pure form of ecstasy that is a little less energy and a little more lovey- and ‘chill’.
Increasingly, as the ravers age, they are apparently skipping the rave altogether and going straight to the chill. The drill. They (usually 8-20) meet at someone’s gorgeous home – the ravers have aged, gotten good jobs and nice houses by now lol. They begin with light snacks and conversation and a drink. Early in the evening the gathering moves to a large room, decorated with nice lighting, pillows, blankets and mattresses, and usually some massage tables and a small dance floor.
Everyone is dressed in lingerie – or ‘kits’ as they are called. Music is put on and people chat, dance, make out and cuddle… all night. There is a general rule against sex in the common area but there is an intermingling of near naked bodies that makes it ‘everything but’.
I was a little skeptical when friends invited us to a chill they were hosting. They were regulars, both hosting and attending, and they assured us we would like it. What the heck.
When we arrived, as expected, we knew no one except the host couple, our friends. The others were all really friendly though and had a great energy and attractiveness. They all knew one another and they certainly made us feel welcome.
After the initial drinks and chatting, the Chill began. Our friends live in a gorgeous old Victorian home and they had converted their living room into the Chill room. It was amazing. Fairy lights, a maharaja-like feel of large pillows and velvety blankets all over half of the floor. The other half was a massage table and dance area.
Everyone was dressed in really sexy lingerie or clubwear/lingerie. Guys were in boxers, women in more elaborate outfits. Many – well, there were only 12 there in total – started dancing. One guy who was know in the group as the master masseuse, started giving massages. And some just cuddled up and chatted with old and new friends.
From the very start it had a really nice combination of a fun, lovey vibe.
As the evening went on, there was less dancing and more massaging and cuddling and making out. As promised, there was no over sex, although it was clear that this was a difficult line to hold for some.
We started until abut 4am and felt we had an awesome time. Fun, new experience. Others stayed longer. I’m not sure how long but our friends told us these can go on for as long as 36-48 hours. Crazy.
All in all the Chill was a pretty awesome experience. It won’t be an every weekend thing but I liked it a lot.
