I remember, back in the day, how excited my wife and I were when the first “couples-oriented” sex store opened in our hometown. This was about 10 years ago, and it was the time- at least in our city – there was a massive adult store that catered to the fantasies of couples. It had a huge, for the time, selection of costumes, videos, toys, fetish gear, lube. The first time we went, I remember being shocked that there were actually more women than men in the store. My wife and I would, literally, plan an evening around a visit to the adult fun store. Remember, this was a time when sex toys and sexy games, while available, were not all over the internet. We would spend sometimes over an hour getting turned on by what we saw, and would never leave without spending at least $200 – rent a few movies, buy a games, at least one costume and often a new toy.
This ‘couple-orientation’ for sex shops was new at the time. Before then, the only places that sold sexual products, at least where we lived, were seedy porno rental shops with a few sex toys and lube behind the counter. My wife never went into those places and I did occasionally, but in all honesty I felt like a bit of a sleaze-ball when I did.
Fast forward 10 years. Every second website seems to sell all forms of sex toys, games, lubes…. They are ubiquitous, cheap and discreet. I am not an old ruddy duddy; I fully admit that they fill the market niche well. But it leaves me wondering how the local shops – the bricks and mortar shops – can compete with these deeply discounted online sites. .I think the experience there was very important to us in opening our minds to our sexuality in a way that the online experience does not provide
I love our local couples sex stores (there are many now) and I would hate to see them go the way of the local bookseller. So, next Friday night, take your friends or partner on a ‘date’ to the sex shop.
