I am just catching up on my House of Lies viewing and am still early in Season 2. I just saw the episode where Matt Damon guests stars as himself wanting to set up a charitable foundation so he can “piss all over George Clooney at the Oscars next year”. It is the most brilliant, self mocking, outrageous piece of acting I have seen on a TV show in years.
For those not familiar with House of Lies, it is a relatively new Showtime program, starring Don Cheadle as a very highly paid management consultant. He and his team go from city to city living debaucherous lifestyles and helping clients turn their businesses around for exorbitant fees.
In this episode Matt Damon comes to them wanting advice on starting a charity. His motivation is to increase his profile in the run-up to Oscar season, so that his can look better than other stars like Clooney who are seen as global do gooders. Damon plays the perfect over indulged, insecure, bored, irresponsible superstar. He engages extensively with Cheadle’s team, but his only real directions are that he would like it to involve something where he gets to play with guns in Afghanistan, a drug-fuelled evening clubbing – hopefully with the hot staffer- and that Cheadle gives him a blow job to seal the deal. Strong ethics and morality run both ways. Cheadle negotiates him down to a “handie”.
Damon shows real courage portraying himself this way. It os hilarious and, arguable I am sure, a little close to home for some of his tinsle town A-listers.
