Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will know that Kim Kardashian has – once again – broken the internet with her body. This time it’s a naked selfie she posted of herself on Instagram to celebrate International Woman’s Day.
Reactions have bene polarized. Pink and others are accusing her of demeaning the significance of woman’s day. Ellen has rushed to her defence. And others, like Sharon Osborne are jumping on the bandwagon and posting their own naked selfies.
So, who’s winning? As usual, its the Kardashians.
As of this morning, dozens of celebrities and quasi celebrities and thousands of other plain old woman are rushing to get their naked selfies up. Kim K has, once again, set the trend thorough her audacious behaviour.
What are we to make of this mini trend of woman getting their nude selfies out on social media. At one level its great that we are breaking – further – the taboos around nudity and sex. On the other hand, I worry a little about any trend that is instigated by a Kardashian; is this just an unthought-through response to all the attention Kim got through the stunt.
Personally, I think nudity and her nudity on the internet has gotten so ubiquitous that we are passing the tipping point where having some naked photos out there will come back and bite you. Although I may be wrong in this – there may still be prospective employers, or prospective partner who may judge you harshly in the future if they scroll through your old Instagram feed and find your best Kim K impersonation.
So… I suppose.. if you’re thinking of posting that naked selfie this morning: (i) good for you; and (ii) think it through.
