I had a strange but wonderful day today. My daughter and I went to a city about two hours away, where she wanted to spend the day with a friend. I was left on my own for about 6 hours – no social connections and (as a little experiment, no phone.
I took a couple books and wandered downtown to spend the day. It was amazing. I sat on a bench for a couple of hours, near the river, and read a book. Not to sound too ADHD but I rarely read for that long and not let myself get distracted by my phone.
Then I had a last lunch at a little cafe downtown. My waitress ended up having her break just as I was finishing eating, so she sat and chatted with me for about 40 minutes about the psychology of COVID — we was a psych major LOL. It was a fantastic connection with a fantastic person. And I never would have met her had I not been alone or if I’d been immersed in my phone.
I know this is not a revolutionary finding, but its a good reminder of how engaging the world can be when we disengage a little bit from our normal routines and our electronics. To be honest, I was a little disappointed when my wife had initially decided not to join me for this little road trip. I’m pretty happy about it now.
