My daughter just went back to school. Already, she’s feeling this incredible stress in balancing homework (there is a lot), her job (which she likes a lot and needs to pay for her phone), being a competitive athlete (which she loves!! and helps her stay fit). And she realized last night that she doesn’t have any of her mandatory volunteer hours that she needs.
Layer onto this, constant social media pressure to always stay connected with friends and to show all the wonderful things you are doing. Its really hard to be a kid.
Already, in this young school year we are seeing the effect. Last night another student who works with my daughter quit her job mid-shift, melting down over how much stressed she is. And another friend of my daughter’s showed up to school yesterday with cut marks on her wrists.
I know its kind of ‘the norm’ for us to complain about how hard we had it as kids and how easy it is now. But that could not be further from the truth. Kids today face stresses and challenges we cold never have imagined. The pressure of social media. The distractions of having a TV in your pocket 24/7, the expectations of being the perfectly rounded, achieving kid. Its really tough. And we are lucky we didnt have to face it,
