Scott Adams (Dilbert Creator) had a provocative piece in on Mercury News this week. He, essentially, argues that government needs to be broken down and rebuilt in order to be fixed. In his words:
“The country needed to be broken before it was fixed. The government had just been ossified,” he says. “And I thought, at the very least, he was going to break it. So I did favor somebody as a destroyer — a destroyer of all the ways we used to think. And what’s different about the way I approach this is that I have very high confidence in Americans as a group to break stuff and fix it. It’s what we do best.”
There is something to this, and as much as I detest Trump, there is a very damaging and widespread belief in America – and in other western democracies – that government is broken and is an inhibitor to progress and prosperity. With a culturally accept frame like this, even the most talented leftist politicians cannot get things done. In political-speak, frames are ‘sticky’. Once people accept them, it is very hard to move people off them. And people have accepted that government is bad, corrupt, slow, and damaging to progress. So.. whether it is true or not… maybe it needs to be torn down before it can be rebuilt.
A friend I cycle with – last summer he had to inject anal suppositories for for about two weeks because he was have some serious bowel issues. I don’t think he thought twice daily anal suppositories are great, but they are what he needed at the time. So I guess the theory I am toying with is
