I did the right thing today. I am sure my cabby thought he did too. I was taking a cab to the airport and the cabbie asked for cash instead of a credit card because his credit card reader was out of battery.
Fair game. I said that if he would come with me, I would go into the airport and use the cash machine. Turns out the machine is out of order. So I call the 1-800 number on the machine and ask them to reset the machine. This works and I am able to withdraw cash and pay him.
He obviously appreciated my effort and gives me three blank receipts to “use if I want”. I am sure he is trying to reward me for doing him a favour. But think about it. I did it to be honest. I owed him money and I wanted to do right by him, even though (as the operator at the ATM said when I called), I was legally entitled to refuse payment when he could not accept my credit card).
I did not want to rip him off. So, why would I then want to rip off one of my clients by billing them with a fake receipt. I told him this and he shook his head, with that “you’ll never make it in this world brother” look.
