What is it that makes so many of these brilliant celebrities fall so heavily into self destruction? Is it true that for people of a certain genius, the world is just too boring; when examined through the eyes of a heightened caliber, life is just too pointless? Hoffman, and so many others – John Belushi, River Phoenix, Health Ledger…. – are they looking for a richer, more vibrant reality that only hard-core drugs can provide? I suspect that is often the case.
There was a brilliant moment in the TV show House of Lies. Matt Damon was guest starring, as himself. He plays himself as a shallow, self indulgent, spoiled mega star. He is brilliant in his self deprecation and critique of hollywood actors. Anyway, there dis a scene where Matt and Marty Kahn (Don Cheadle) go out to this exclusive nightclub. Matt and Marty are in this cordoned off VIP area where everyone else in the club swoons over them. After a super-intense scene where, to Matt’s delight, Marty gets beaten up and two female supermodels make out for him, Matt leans back looks up and the sky and says, with complete exasperation “OK……..what’s next”.
The world is boring to those who can have anything they want.
I have no great insight as I am, luckily I guess, not brilliant enough to derive the deeper meaning or solution. But it is really, really sad.
