As far as conservative politicians go, I love … LOVE .. Angela Merkel. She is this generation’s finest example of a fiscally wise, socially progressive globalist national leader. She has, quite literally, held Europe together, saved the global climate change agenda, pulled Europe back from the brink of hate-spawned nationalism (not all the way back, but a solid improvement). And the way she’s been bitch-slapping Trump on trade, environment, globalization. I love her.
BUT… same sex marriage. This has always bothered me about her. She doesn’t like it… is in fact quite strongly personally opposed to it.
So, imagine my delight when she suddenly announced a free vote in the German Parliament, and encouraged her own party to vote their conscious. She knew the result would be (and it was) … Germany will move to legalize same sex marriage.
What she did is a big deal. She was clearly opposed to gay marriage (sadly… but its her deep belief) and she could have whipped the vote (as a party leader very often does). But she accepted that her colleagues and the German people were in a different place than her on gay marriage and she willingly allowed the will of Parliament and the will of the German people carry this important issue. She knew her position would lose and she, allowed it to happen because her belief in democracy was stronger than her belief in her own position.
Good for her.
