I have always been of two minds when it comes to Facebook.
On one hand, it is a great, low effort, way to keep in touch with old acquaintances, friends and family.
On the other hand, some of the people I link with on Facebook are not an active and current part of my ice for legitimate reason – we’re just not really friends anymore.
Something interesting happened this week. An old university buddy whom I had not seen nor heard from in 20 years sent a friend request on Facebook. It was accompanied by a message saying he noticed we are in the same city and that we should grab a drink. This is a guy I really liked and was close with, but we had fallen out of touch.
So I accepted the friend request and we agreed to meet for drinks later in the week.
Wow! We have absolutely nothing in common anymore. Our lives have gone in very different directions… he has become quite bitter, mostly seems to work, watch TV and complain about stuff. We just couldn’t have less in common and it was apparent within the first 15 minutes of us getting together.
I understand that this is just life and that people change as they age. I just wish I could still see him as the guy I really liked when we were in college. And I can’t anymore. Thanks Facebook!!
