Rob Ford has officially hit rock bottom. Having now copped to smoking crack, a major alcohol problem and looking like a sophmoric ass ranting death threats on video, things can hardly get worse. Every new revelation, rather then being shocking, simply has people shaking there heads in mix of pity and shame for the man and the city he governs.
So where does he go from here? The smart money has him being pushed into resignation (or impeachment) and fading back into suburban invisibility. As a city councillor he is, surprisingly, still very electable in his ward.
But might we see another term for Mayor Ford? I, personally, would not bet against it.
In the past 24 hours, Rob Ford has begun to rebuild himself, in a subtle and unintentional way, into a guy you could root for in comeback story. His latest press conference was pathetic, in the liberal sense. Some of his staunchest opponents had to admit that they kind of felt sorry for the guy. When he started to apologize again, and then stopped and said he didn’t know what to say, we all go the strong sense that he very sincerely did not know how to get himself out of a mess he had created.
And that is the magic of Rob Ford – the heart of Ford Nation. He is a deeply flawed man, yet he has an almost unique ability to, in one breath, own up to his flaws while discrediting his enemies for holding him accountable for them. Yes he has a drinking problem and a generally f%^$^ed up life, but Ford comes off as genuine and sympathetic in playing the victim to those who go after him for those flaws.
So, here is my prediction: 1. Rob Ford will own up to everything; 2. he will re-profess his love for the city and its taxpayers; 3. he will disappear for a few months of R&R and treatment; 4. he will return a slightly healthier and slightly skinnier man; and 5. suburban Toronto will welcome him with open arms and rally behind their comeback kid as the liberals downtown elitists continue their personal attacks.
And Toronto will slide down a road to Hell for allowing that idiot to govern them for another 4 years.
