What a spectacle. No one can feel proud after that. Trump, Biden. The American people. As one commentator put it “This is an unutterable disgrace. The American humiliation continues”.
No need to replay the low points. There were many. The president telling white supremacists to ‘stand by’ . Biden telling the president to shut up. The President talking over everyone and lying on a non stop reel.
But that’s not what I want to dwell on, I want to get people thinking about why we need better. A few years ago I wrote an article on why we need a strong America. I argued that America is the greatest, most successful country in the world’s history – an argument I, as a Canadian, do not make lightly. No country as conceived of a better governance systems (read the declaration of independence), innovated better (apple), and created so many international institutions (the UN) than the United States. The world does well when America leads it responsibly.
I also, despite loathing Donald Trump and being an avowed liberal, wrote that the 2016 Donald Trump won may have been a good thing. Globalization, trade liberalization and urbanization left too many people behind.
Finally, back in 2016, I also argued that American government – and global governance institutions were so broken that Trump may be “the anal douche that America need to get regular again”.
So, I’m not dissing America and nor am I a knee jerk Trump hater. But he’s jumped the shark. There are things a president has to be. He has to want to united the country – Regan wanted this; as did Obama. He has to be mostly honest – Bill Clinton may have lied about felatio but he told necessary truths about America’s challenges in the Middle East and the failing of his government. He has to respect democracy. No president has ever, or should ever, say he may not respect the outcome of the vote. No president has, or should ever, call on white supremacists to stand by in case the election doesn’t go their way.
America is a great country and Donald Trump is unworthy of it.
