Although I don’t blog on it frequently, I am a very ardent environmentalist. I don’t eat meat, I rarely drive, and I work in the environmental field. Yet, many of my close friends are not environmentalists. I have always valued my ability to not hold people in judgment over the choices they make. Some people are conservative, some liberal; some people are sexually open, some more closed; some people care about the environment, some don’t.
But recently, on certain issues, I find it harder to accept the the opposing view. The Environment. I am having a tougher and tougher time accepting that some (a lot) of people are so stridently opposed to doing things or supporting government initiatives that would protect our planet.
The science on most of the key environmental issues – climate change, health impacts of air pollution, ozone depletion, overuse of natural resources. Yet some people are absolutely opposed to any actions that would prevent these damages to the Earth. And those opposed – they have a tremendous ability to mobilize money and people to make sure that those who care about these issues are left with few possible solution. And it bothers me.
To be clear, I understand (and respect) those who are ambivalent about the environment. There are lots of issues to care about these days – poverty, personal safety… how you will earn a living to support your family. I fully understand and respect those who just don’t have time to care about the same issues I care about.
But it is the religious-like opposition that people have to environmental protection that bothers me. The pride in which people loathe ‘environmentalists’.
I simply don’t get it. And I’m I’m the mood to vent. Back to the sex posts tomorrow.
