I was perusing some Christian blogging sites recently, absorbing the anguish and fury with which the Christian world is anticipating the release of 50 Shades of Grey. They are worked up and pissed off as only religious people can be. Their issues (where to start?): glamourizing sex outside of marriage, non-procreative sex, playing with power in a sexual context, glamourizing BDSM, the explicitness of the sex scenes that will likely be in the movie. Yes… they are pissed.
Contrast this to the Christian right wing position on torture and drone assassinations. I just finished an article in the New Yorker on torture practices at Guantanamo Bay and drone strike assassinations. No matter how you about feel terror suspects (emphasis on the word suspects) the practices used to extract information and eliminate potential terror threats before any applicant of legal due process should be shocking to us. The US legal system is respected as the best and fairest in the world because it resumes innocence in absence of proof of guilt and it allows due process and legal representation before finding guilt. The drone assassination program, Guantanamo Bay and the allowance for torture all fly in the face of decades of balanced, fair and humane legal regime that made the US the most respected democracy on the planet.
Yet Christians support all of these ‘war tactics’ in overwhelming numbers. What??? To be clear.. in the Christian mind:
– consensual, made up torture scenarios – An abhoration to God and his word
– real life torture of people to who have not been proven guilty of anything (except often associating with bad or questionable people — Game on, says God
So Christians… if you’re worried about a culture of torture and abuse of power, its time to reset your sights. There is an enemy out there… but it’s not Christian Grey.
