Virtual Reality and Porn – you may never need to leave your basement again

Not to sound like a luddite, but until last night I had never experienced virtual reality. I’m not a video gamer (at all) so it was I had never had  chance to try one of the VR headsets that seem to be all the rage these days.

But last night, at a music festival sponsored by a telecommunication company, I got to try a VR headset at one of the kiosks. It was a G-rated video game – a roller coaster ride.  And I was absolutely stupefied at how realistic is felt.  I could feel my stomach drop out as we went over large dips, the anticipation on my gut as we approached the top of a crest, and I almost fell off my chair leaning into a tight curve.  It was amazing!

And.. in that moment… I realized why everyone is so hyped about VR… and the possible link to adult entertainment.  So, this morning, I did a little internet research.  And maybe this is news only to me.. but VR and Sex is becoming a thing.

The concept… a VR headset to bring video surroundings to life.. in this case someone having sex with you.  A masturbatory toy on … well, on any part of your body try want. And a link between what is going on in your VR scenario and the sensations sent through your toys.

I was able to find example of bold first movers, partnerships between VR and sex toy companies.  The results seems a little clunky, but for the first time ever I can see a pretty direct path to the VR sexual experience that might work. Its kind of exciting and kind of frightening.

On the positive, masturbating to porn kind of sucks. It will do in a pinch, but surely things can get better for the solo pleasure seeker.  VR sex seems infinitely more enjoyable.

But on the downside, is VR porn maybe too good.  For me, personally, I would never want a replacement for a living, feeling, expressing sexual partner. But I’m not everyone. If we make the VR sex experience too good, do we risk losing people to their VR sexual world.  Will human companionship, for them, become obsolete?  This cannot be a good thing.

Societal implications aside, I’m pretty excited to give VR sex a try should I ever get the chance.  But given how long it took me simply to see a VR device I doubt this will happen any time too soon.  Probably a good thing.
