What’s On Your Bedside Table?

When I used to interview prospective job applicants, one of the questions I often used was “what is on your night table beside your bed?’. What I was looking for is whether there were multiple books that they were concurrently reading, a bunch of electronics… etc. The idea was to get a sense of whether they were the type of person to focus on one task until it was completed (eg.. one book and little else) or whether they liked having a bunch of projects going on at once and would bounce from one to the other.

We can’t really ask these questions now for fear it would interpreted as asking about their bedroom activities, but I still think you can tell something about a person by what is on (or in) their night table.

Today, I found myself looking through my bedside table and this old interview question popped into my life. So, here is what is in mine:

  • a box of Easter Eggs (that’s what I was looking for at the time);
  • four different sex toys (3 for my wife and one for me)
  • lube and massage oil
  • two books or erotic stories and an erotic role play book
  • a few other non-sexual books: Shantoram (highly recommend it); Last Last Days of Light (also great); and the new Thomas Freidman book.
  • about a hundred discussion cards – either sexual or moral
  • a printout of the 100 books you need to read before you die from Goodreads and Esquire’s list of 80 books every man must read
  • one copy of Playboy and an old Economist

I’d hire me.

  1. That’s a hell of a creative interview question!

    On my bedside table is a book (Attached, which I just finished reading), a lamp, 2 tubes of hand lotion, an alarm clock, a hair tie, and a candle.

    The condoms, lube, toys, etc. are in the bedside table drawer out of sight!
